The expansion of The Galleria into a super-regional mall will create a dynamic lifestyle hub for the evolving Abu Dhabi community in line with Al Maryah Island’s positioning as a business and lifestyle destination. Unlike other parts of the world, people in the UAE spend a significant amount of time in malls, and consequently, The Galleria will accommodate that better than any other retail environment ever has. In this session Design Director Sherif Anis, will discuss the design and development of this expansion and how it will deliver a unique destination within Abu Dhabi’s capital city.

  • Creating a multi-faceted development that will see a world-class environment in which to live, work and play 
  • Reinforcing the country’s future as a global destination by delivering a place that will not only change the way Abu Dhabi looks, but change the way the world looks at Abu Dhabi
  • Currently with over 400 stores, September 2019 will see the expansion of offerings when 250 new stores are opened, delivering more choice and flexibility for consumers
  • Becoming a ‘one stop shop’ by providing entertainment venues including a 21-screen VOX Cinema with IMAX, a flagship Xtreme Zone and urban parks to catering for all ages and encouraging customer dwell time

Shopping precincts are evolving to look more like town centres that are an active part of the community, rather than the traditional retail models. The design and layout of these precincts continues to develop as more focus is placed on these as hubs as actively contributing to the community culture of a particular area. In this session, HDR’s Susanne Pini will discuss how customer expectations have transformed the retail service model and will examine what the design future of these precincts will look like as shopping motivations continue to evolve and develop.

  • Understanding demographics by recognising consumers heightened sense of design and access to instant digital information

The redevelopment and extension of Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre was a chance to create a destination for the local community.  The space has been designed to celebrate the food and art culture of Sydney’s Inner West and to acknowledge the industrial heritage of the local area, while enhancing the retail, leisure, dining and fresh food offerings of the existing shopping precinct.  The presentation will discuss;
·The challenges of creating flexible retail with indoor and outdoor spaces
· Exposing building services to add to the look and feel of the industrial heritage
· Why sustainability was important to the community and how this has been incorporated into the design
