Dan Smith, Patent and Licensing Strategist at Lenovo/Motorola, has over 16 years of experience in advanced technologies and telecommunication systems. He specializes in standard essential patents, patent pools, IP strategy, invention creation, patent cultivation, portfolio development, global management, and licensing. Dan previously served as Director of Patents at CableLabs and as Special Assistant Attorney General for Colorado. He has also founded several ventures, including The Spot Climbing Gym, Desont Audio (a high-end speaker and amplifier company), and his private patent practice, The Patent Smith. Dan volunteers as Vice President and Advocacy Committee Chair at the National Association of Patent Practitioners (NAPP), promoting the interests of patent professionals and advancing industry best practices.
While the EU passed its AI Act in March 2024, the US has experienced somewhat of a complicated start regarding regulation on AI. With President Biden’s Executive Order in October 2023 and Colorado’s first in the nation AI law in May 2024, as well as the USPTO and FDA releasing their own guidance about the use of AI, the regulatory landscape is blurry for companies who are eager to trial but worried about compliance and ethics without the necessary laws to follow. The question, then, becomes how companies can push ahead with innovation and documentation whilst remaining compliant, ethical and respectful of customer and employee data.
