11:30 AM STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING THEIR PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY
This workshop is focused on developing professional identity, a key dimension of employability that enhances graduates’ confidence and capabilities when transitioning to work.
- It will examine how work experience, in particular Work Integrated Learning (WIL), can be useful for developing professional identity among higher education students.
- Participants will be given guidance on designing WIL that helps students to develop their professional self. This will include sharing and discussing activities which encourage students to make sense of their workplace experiences.
- The workshop is targeted at those who interact with students who gain work experience during their university years, such as through volunteering, service learning, internships, placements and/or practicums.

2:10 PM Development of Professional Identity through Work Integrated Learning
Contemporary work requires new graduates to have a strong awareness of professional practice. A sufficiently formed professional identity will better enable graduating students to perform and contribute as they transition from university to the workplace. Yet is it realistic to expect this of new graduates? Is higher education sufficiently focused on developing this critical yet underexplored dimension of graduate employability? Denise will draw on her recent research to
- Consider the meaning of professional identity and its importance for future work.
- Highlight the value of workplace learning experiences for developing professional identity among higher education students,
- Present strategies used in her own work integrated learning programs at Edith Cowan University.
