9:00 am - 11:30 am Developing a Strategy to Effectively Manage the Complexities of Retrofitting and Refurbishing While Maintaining Operations

Unlike new builds, retrofits and refurbishments don’t always have the luxury of shutting down operations to complete the work. This means that there needs to be careful strategies and planning to ensure safety and awareness for tenants and guests, as well as precision to ensure little disruption as possible. This workshop will assist you to develop best practice strategies for overcoming the complexities in delivering the project in a live operating environment.

  • The importance of communication: Establishing good relationships and reasonable timelines with your project team to achieve the right outcomes
  • Identifying contractors who have the experience required to deliver quality finishes and services to tight timescales
  • How to minimise the disruptions to clients and guests through a stage implementation process
  • Incentives and strategies you can introduce to help retain tenants and maintain satisfaction during the project

The term ‘sustainability’ has broadened in use to include more environmental factors than just energy and water, more economic issues than risk and resilience, and more social topics than health and safety. This means that achieving sustainability through retrofits and refurbishments are not necessarily based on the technology or systems, but the strategy and programs behind the project. This workshop will look closely at where organisations can truly work to become sustainable on a tight budget, whether it be from the design process, engaging construction and management supply chains, integrating technology or analysing building standards and codes to help achieve the most ROI in the long term from your retrofit or refurb project.

What will you learn from this workshop?
  • Start with the business case: Identify what the stumbling blocks are for building the business case and how this might influence your green purchasing decisions
  • Putting asset and facilities management at the front on mind to improve your existing assets and improve their performance
  • Surveying the building to identify areas of improvement to help select and identify the right building performance technologies that will be of most value to your building
  • Energy saving improvements through cultural development: How you can explore the use of low-cost employee behavioural changes to help improve your building’s efficiency and reduce energy usage
