Kitty Hutchison is a proud, passionate, and energetic community nurse and senior educator who has actively stepped into leadership roles to advocate for and influence decision making around community nursing in Australia. She has excelled in clinical, educational, and professional leadership roles within Queensland Health, Griffith University and is a Fellow of Australian College of Nursing (ACN), and Chair of Nursing in the Community ACN Faculty.
Through the COVID-19 crisis, nursing & midwifery has been in the public eye more than ever. Nurses often are being seen as compassionate helpers. The public image of nursing, however, also consists of stereotypes such as nursing being a ‘doing’ profession. In addition, nurses themselves reinforce stereotypes in order to fit into what is expected, even when they believe professional behaviour demands otherwise. One thing is clear – these notions and stereotypes are far from true. This panel discussion will see nursing leaders at the forefront of innovative thinking share with you tips and strategies to bring about a systemic change to how a nurse & midwife views oneself and their contribution to the healthcare system into the future.

Kitty’s extensive work with Community Nursing has clarified her belief that looking through the lens of a nurse gives ability to see the whole patient and assess not only the clinical needs but also the social, environmental, and cultural elements that impact on health outcomes. With their ability to perceive those vulnerable to poor health outcomes, Nurses are an invaluable asset in the identification and optimisation of care coordination when addressing an individual’s needs. When nurses recognise how a holistic and wellness approach can align rather than be in opposition to our medically focused system, they are empowered to confidently take their place in the integrated health team.
