9:10 am - 9:50 am NABERS Response: Assessing the Efficiency and Environmental Performance of Your Building Post- Refurbishment and Identifying Opportunities to Improve Long-Term Sustainability

Sara Rathborne - Sector Lead, NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System)
Buildings use 40% of the world’s energy, emit 40% of the world’s carbon emissions and use 20% of the world’s available drinking water. NABERS’ mission, therefore, is to help influence how buildings can positive contribute to the environment. By assessing efficiency and environmental performance, this can lead to long-term sustainability and act as a future proofing strategy to boost the life cycle of your building. In fact, the past 20 years reveal that rated buildings have saved over $400 million in energy bills.

This session will dive deeper into:
  • High performance buildings equals high performing business: Attracting tenants through sustainability
  • How to set meaningful targets to make your building or tenancy more efficient and how you can work towards targeting a 6 Star rating
  • Having a better understanding of how your building performs and the impact it has to make decisions about how to reduce operating costs and contribute to a healthier environment

12:10 pm - 12:50 pm City of Sydney’s Building Tune-Up Program: Maximising Comfort, Savings and Reliability of Commercial Buildings

Chris Fitzpatrick - Sustainability Engagement Coordinator – Building Tune-Up, City of Sydney
Commercial buildings, from hotels, offices to retail outlets, are responsible for approximately 10% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. As part of advocating for sustainable buildings in the Sydney CBD, the City of Sydney developed the Building Tune- Up Program to support building owners and facilities managers to think about retrofitting opportunities that will bring cost-effective building performance improvements. This may include optimising building management systems, improving maintenance methods and reducing energy, water and waste. This session will look closer into City of Sydney’s program, including:

  • How to identify priority actions and plans to take a step forward and retrofit your building with sustainability in mind
  • Creating a strategic partnership to help with educating building owners and facilities managers and understand the type of issues they’re dealing with
  • Leveraging data analytics systems to help turn data into actionable outcomes
  • How environmental performance ratings help to drive improvements and savings

12:50 pm - 1:50 pm NETWORKING LUNCH

Interactive Discussion Groups (IDGs)
This is your chance to make your conference experience truly interactive and collaborative. Each IDG is set in a roundtable format and will be facilitated by an expert practitioner in the space. In two rotations, each IDG will last for 30 minutes, allowing you to discuss both topics in the time allocated.

TOPIC ONE

1:50 pm - 2:50 pm Understanding Consumer Demand and Leveraging Economic Growth: What Commercial Refurbishments can Learn from Sustainable Homes
Suzanne Toumbourou - Executive Director, ASBEC (Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council)

3:20 pm - 4:00 pm Embarking on a Low Carbon Refurbishment and Retrofit of Commercial Buildings: Challenges, Opportunities, Dollars and Sense

Scientia Professor Deo Prasad - Chief Executive Officer, Low Carbon Living CRC
Building owners and managers and their commercial tenants are increasingly recognising the advantages to low carbon refurbishments where the benefits of “decarbonizing” commercial buildings include lower energy bills, and greater staff productivity and happier customers thanks to healthier indoor environments. Yet, it can be challenging to achieve this due to conflicting tenant and owner priorities and complex energy systems. However, organisations need to embrace the opportunities and bridge the gap between sustainability goals and this present, complex state of commercial buildings. In reference to a recent guide on low carbon retrofit for commercial buildings, the Low Carbon Living CRC will discuss:

  • Assessing building performance before any changes are made to understand the implications of the retrofit for tenants
  • Making the case for LCR: ensuring appropriate financial assessment and advocacy, the identification and implementation of best available technology solutions and the use of benchmarking and certification tools to verify what is planned and built
  • Establishing the cooperation of property owners, managers and tenants to meet standards for environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality
