3:20 PM Embarking on a Low Carbon Refurbishment and Retrofit of Commercial Buildings: Challenges, Opportunities, Dollars and Sense
Building owners and managers and their commercial tenants are increasingly recognising the advantages to low carbon refurbishments where the benefits of “decarbonizing” commercial buildings include lower energy bills, and greater staff productivity and happier customers thanks to healthier indoor environments. Yet, it can be challenging to achieve this due to conflicting tenant and owner priorities and complex energy systems. However, organisations need to embrace the opportunities and bridge the gap between sustainability goals and this present, complex state of commercial buildings. In reference to a recent guide on low carbon retrofit for commercial buildings, the Low Carbon Living CRC will discuss:
- Assessing building performance before any changes are made to understand the implications of the retrofit for tenants
- Making the case for LCR: ensuring appropriate financial assessment and advocacy, the identification and implementation of best available technology solutions and the use of benchmarking and certification tools to verify what is planned and built
- Establishing the cooperation of property owners, managers and tenants to meet standards for environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality
